This year we will have independent reading every day, so students are asked to always have a book. These can be brought from home, or borrowed from the classroom or school libraries.
In Reading Workshop we will be focusing on reading strategies, finding the main idea and details of the text we read, and forming critical personal responses. We will read news article, current events, short stories, poems, and a variety of fictional genres.
In Writing Workshop we will focus on the stages of the writing process, persuasive/opinion pieces, and the mechanics of our sentences (capitals, punctuation, etc).
We will be concentrating on revisiting our reading strategies such as inferencing, connecting, and questioning. We are working on finding the main idea of what we are reading (focus on non-fiction) and "capturing" our thoughts while reading/listening.
In the area of speaking and listening we will have some whole class discussions based on current event, as well as our personal responses and reading tasks.
We are always practicing our active listening skills and showing respect for the time and opinions of others.
We are going to set up our Google accounts!
